DeepSeek is the latest addition to the world of LLMs that has been disrupting the global AI market. Within one week of its launch, DeepSeek’s R1 gained the top spot as the most downloaded AI chatbot in the App Store in the US.
During the same time, it also wiped down nearly $600 billion from NVIDIA’s market cap. Why? Because it demonstrated how efficient LLMs can be developed within limited budget and advanced AI chips.
DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company that develops large language models that are huge and as capable as global giants – ChatGPT and Gemini. However, they are developed at less than 1/10th of their cost.
This great achievement quickly took it to the top making it a global sensation. But it impacted the company as well.
Soon after its launch, this model was bombarded with several DDoS attacks in phases. These cyberattacks forced DeepSeek to even halt new user registration. Another study conducted by Cisco and the University of Pennsylvania found the model can be easily compromised to various kinds of cyber threats.
This exposes the vulnerabilities in LLMs and raises concerns among cybersecurity experts regarding user safety and privacy.
